If you build your content strictly off of your product, you are excluding over half of your prospective readers. The only people you will reach are the ones that know specifically what to look for. A majority of readers don’t know what they want, and this is where effective marketing comes into play. Your content may have persuasive elements, but those elements prove irrelevant if you don’t reach the audience that needs persuasion. Your target audience will most likely be searching for the answer to their solution and may not even be aware of your product. How is your target audience going to find your content if they don’t know what to search for?

Build your content around your audience and NOT your product.

Though it may seem like a simple concept, stepping out of an entrepreneurial mindset and into that of the audience can be quite challenging. Once mastered, your content will become much more valuable and outreach will increase. The only way to do this is to KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE.

1. Who is your target audience?
Knowing who you are speaking to is the first rule in creating valuable content. Are you directing content at a wide range of people (ex. Adults), or do you have limits to your audience (ex. 60-75 year old females)? Knowing your audience assists in creating personalized content, but can also identify if your audience is too specific and restricting your growth. On the flip side your audience may be too general and limiting you in specializing your content. You can’t mold your audience to your content, but you can easily mold your content to your audience needs.


2. What problem does your audience have? What solution does your content provide?
Knowing this information and establishing it is what will set you apart. Answering these questions goes beyond providing detailed product specs. Your audience wants to know what you will do for them. In a developed digital age, attention spans run short. Failing to address the reader’s issue can easily lead to your content being overlooked. (Ex. instead of reviewing the detailed product specs for a new vacuum cleaner, you can appeal to your audience by addressing the issue of heavy vacuums that can make cleaning feel like a workout. From there, you could provide the solution: a lightweight new design that is easy to maneuver)


3. How is your target audience going to find your content?
This question pertains to the target audience that has no clue who you are. When they are searching for an answer to their problem how are they going to find you? This is where keywords come into play through your content, and why it is so important to understand your audience. Again, focusing on product specs is less likely to translate through search engines and attract attention. (Ex. Instead of titling your work as “The New PicVac 300 Hits Markets” try “Tired of Your Heavy Vacuum Making You Dread Cleaning Day? We Have A Lightweight Solution” The keywords “tired, heavy vacuum, dread cleaning, lightweight, solution” are more likely to relate to your audience.)


Overall, taking your audience into consideration with any marketing move you make is key to consistent outreach and success. Think thoroughly about your reader’s problems, influences, emotions, and how your content provides a clear solution. Tailor your content to your target audience to ensure you are consistent with your work. Doing so creates a loyal and relevant following. Ultimately, you and your audience need to both benefit from your content.
